La maison Scherrer: art at the heart of everything

His father would have liked him to be a doctor, he would have preferred to be a professional dancer, but in the end it was the field of fashion and cosmetics that opened up for Jean-Louis Scherrer. After a short stint at the Conservatoire National de Paris, young Jean-Louis was forced to stop his training after a painful fall. He then became a stylist, working for Dior before collaborating with some of the biggest names in the business, such as Yves Saint-Laurent and Louis Féraud. After years of rich and interesting collaboration, Jean-Louis Scherrer finally felt ready to open his own couture house. In the early 60s, he set up shop in Paris and enjoyed great success. At the height of his fame, Jean-Louis Scherrer decided to sell the company to the Japanese Seibu group. Laid off and dismissed from the company he had created, Jean-Louis Scherrer disappeared on June 20, 2013.

The sweet smell of travel

Although he enjoyed some success with his couture house, Jean-Louis Scherrer also invested a great deal of time in his perfumery business. In 1979, at the height of his career, he launched his first perfume creations: eau de parfum Jean-Louis Scherrer, Scherrer 2 and Nuits Indiennes. Every fragrance created by Jean-Louis Scherrer is the subject of lengthy reflection. The designer models the way he works with textiles on the way he works with perfumes. He's always looking for the right harmony, the perfect balance of scents. To help him, he draws inspiration from his travels in Asia and the Middle East: spicier notes can be found in his fragrances. The idea is to bring out the elegance and refinement of men and women in the concentrate of a few drops of perfume. A challenge that Jean-Louis Scherrer has always risen to with flying colors.

Jean-Louis Scherrer was a discreet designer, working in the shadows with the most luxurious materials. The brand's advertising campaigns were few and far between, and success came mainly from the designer's aura and reputation. Despite this, one advertising poster made a lasting impression: that for a perfume called Jean-Louis Scherrer in the 1980s. "The passion of the moment. The eternal feminine", went the slogan. Plunging necklines, hidden faces - it's all about suggestion. Sexy and glamorous, this advertising contributed to the perfume's success.

But Jean-Louis Scherrer is also a family business. Jean-Louis Scherrer's daughter has long been the house's main muse. A model, she perfectly embodied the brand image of her father's company. Today, Scherrer boutiques no longer exist. But the greatness of its creator remains eternal.
